As James and Louise were sitting at a Bierstuben in Berlin’s Tiergarten, Louise pointed toward a group of teenage girls who walked by in military order. She said, “They’re the Bund Deutscher Mädel, much like the Girl Scouts in the US and UK. The Nazis have a clear message for women: they’re to stay at home to be good wives and mothers while their husbands support the family. The primary and secondary educational system has been adjusted to promote these goals.
This discrimination is not unique to Germany. During the current Depression, the Marriage Bar has been the custom in the US and the UK. Despite the fact that women’s pay is only half that of men for the same job, it’s become an accepted practice that women aren’t hired if there are qualified men available. Indeed, women teachers are being forced to resign when they marry, as there might be a male qualified to be hired. I’ve also read that the German government is offering subsidies to enable elite Nazi Party families to aim for four children. Orphanages are state-funded, and adoptions are being encouraged so older couples can reach this quota.”
Apart from the obvious gender discrimination, James thought this might have a sinister side. His maths tutor and MI5 recruiter, Richard Chillingworth, had once suggested that as Germany expanded its borders, Hitler would need more Aryan Germans to populate the acquired territories. For obvious reasons, Hitler had his eye on the fertile lands, raw materials, and industrial infrastructure to the east. Louise said this strategy had been promoted in the German press and called Lebensraum, or living space.
They later discovered that this program had evolved into Lebensborn, whereby pregnancy between suitable ‘Aryan’ women and SS officers was promoted and encouraged to create their ‘Master Race’ for their 1,000-year Reich. This is a topic explored in the second and third novels in the series.
The denigration of women in the MAGA movement is not accidental. Its roots go back to 1930s Germany and, of course, before. The Republican Party is systematically planning to remove rights for women. It is not just the repealing of Roe v. Wade by SCOTUS, but some have suggested women should not be allowed to vote, should have their Constitutionally guaranteed rights to free travel between states suspended in case they might be pregnant, and should lose their healthcare options and the ability to serve in combat roles in the military.
It also appears that violating marriage vows is becoming a prerequisite for appointment as Trump’s Secretary of Defense—not to mention Trump himself. Twice now, accomplished women have been nominated to become the President of the United States. Both times, they were defeated by a narcissistic, racist, and adjudicated sexual predator; an insurrectionist, as defined under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. Like Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, both have had multiple wives and violated their marriage vows on numerous occasions, fathering children with other women while married. Says much about the party of family values.
