In Addlestone, the first book in The Addlestone Chronicles trilogy, James Harcourt-Heath, a final year Cambridge University maths student, is recruited by the British Secret Services, Section MI5. His first assignment is to join the secret society called The Apostles. It’s members were believed, by John Maynard Keynes, himself a former Apostle, to be Marxists whose aim is to align the UK with the Soviet Union. At James’s first meeting he met Anthony Blunt, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Kim Philby, and John Cairncross. They are now known as the Cambridge Five and were part of a Soviet spy ring that was active through the 1930s until the 1950s.
After graduating from Cambridge, all five secured sensitive and high-ranking positions within the British government; Maclean, Burgess, and Cairncross at the Foreign Office, Philby at MI6 and Blunt at MI5. All passed classified information on to the KGB during wartime and the Cold War period in the 1950s. Through their employment at the FO, MI6 ,and MI5, they had access to Top Secret, Secret, and classified documents.
Does this remind anyone of the files Donald J Trump kept at Mar-a-Lago and then refused to give up to the FBI? He regularly praises dictators such as Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán, and Xi Jinping. It is clear he retained these documents for a reason and no doubt has more secreted in his hidden closet in his bedroom and in the locked storeroom that the Secret Service failed to access when they had a subpoena to search his private club. Did he take copies with a purpose and has passed them on to the enemies of the United States? Perhaps we will never know.
