Here’s a snippet from Addlestone, the first book in the Addlestone Chronicles trilogy. James is invited by Anthony Blunt to meet a person he described as an influential politician. The person turned out to be Captain Anthony ‘Jock’ Ramsay, Member of Parliament. Over lunch, James was recruited to assist the fascist executive committee of Ramsay’s Nordic League. Ramsay left the luncheon to catch the train from Cambridge back to London. James used that opportunity to ask Blunt about his politics.
Blunt replied, “Think of me as a facilitator. I bring people together who can benefit from each other’s skills. I’d say you and Mosley’s British Union of Fascists have a lot in common. As for me, I’m a committed Marxist. James, what I found interesting about your Apostles discussion paper is that many of your proposals fit nicely into my political view of the world.”
“That can’t be right. Marxism and Fascism are opposite ends of the political spectrum.”
“Come on, James, you’re being naive. Obviously, politicians of every political persuasion employ contrasting rhetoric to enthuse and persuade their unsophisticated rank and file. If you examine Marxism, Socialism, Communism, Fascism, and, for that matter, Laissez-Faire Capitalism, you’ll discover their political goals are identical, as are their strategies and tactics. Each aims to create, support, and defend a dominant bureaucracy controlled by powerful financial and military elites. To survive, every political system requires a skilled and docile working class. Similarly, all regard dissidents and protest as counterproductive, which must be emasculated through civil and criminal law and, if necessary, by police or military force.”
“So, you’ve no problem with a foot in both camps?”
Blunt downed the remainder of his brandy and rose from the table. “It’s always nice to be on the winning side, whatever the outcome.”
Trump regularly attacks his political opponents, claiming they are at the same time Communists, Marxists, Socialists, Democratic Socialists, and Fascists. I truly wonder if he understands the political differences between each approach and how they might contrast with governance under unfettered Capitalism as opposed to government-regulated Capitalism. It is more than likely that his confused and contradictory rhetoric is simply an example of fourth-grader name-calling to see what sticks with his uneducated and gullible MAGA supporters.
