Below is the final excerpt from Addlestone, the first book in the series, The Addlestone Chronicles. It is taken from James Harcourt-Heath’s discussion paper given to the Cambridge University Trinity College Apostles on May 4th 1936.
“Next, I’d like to consider religion. The Church of England has been our established doctrine for the past 400 years. If Catholics are prepared to go along with our policies, I suppose they could be left alone. I’m sure you all are aware that
because their loyalties are to the Bishop of Rome and not to our monarchy, they had been denied the vote until about 100 years ago. This should remind us that religion has been and could once again be used to limit suffrage. For the same reasons, citizens who follow other sects, for example, Jews, Hindus, and Muslims, should be stripped of their franchise and their heathen places of worship demolished. We would justify closing synagogues, temples, and mosques as they would be likely breeding grounds for terrorists.
We might also consider uniforms and badges. To identify and reward loyal citizens, I propose we design and commission an enamelled Union Jack lapel pin. This could be judiciously and ceremoniously awarded to those loyal to our One
Nation Party. At the same time, we would need to identify dissidents. They should be required to wear a different sort of badge or perhaps wristbands to make their foreignness obvious to the authorities as well as other loyal citizens.
Orientals and Blacks are easy to spot. Some Jews wear a yarmulke and Hasidic Jews wear black hats and have long curls. Muslim women wear headscarves. Muslim men sport beards and Sikhs wear turbans. However, a word of caution; potential terrorists could always dispense with their traditional garb and infiltrate our society to wreak havoc as they pleased. To combat this, I recommend we require those who wish to enter and reside in the UK, sign a sworn declaration avowing they are Christians and will adhere to the principles of the Church of England. Once they do so, it would be a simple matter to enlist the clergy to monitor church attendance and report absentees.
I fully recognise the need to protect our borders. Great Britain is an island; we are extremely fortunate to have an ocean barrier against any who wish to enter our country illegally. I now recommend that the Royal Navy and Immigration and Customs officers be granted additional resources and powers to ensure our borders remain impregnable and under our control. Furthermore, it's obviously not in our national interests to be involved in a war with either Germany or Russia. I suggest signing a mutual defence treaty between us and one or possibly both countries to underscore British neutrality. Finally, let me say, my long-term goal is to return our country to the essence of Anglo-Saxon life. I hope some of my proposals will achieve that end. As we enact our plans, expediency must trump bleeding-heart liberal objections. We need to find and support a strong Conservative Party leader who isn’t afraid to say what he thinks or whom he offends. By draining the feral swamp of political cronyism, we can make the United Kingdom a truly Great Britain again.”
James was prescient in his paper as to how an autocrat might seek to repress voting and establish a cult base to ensure he remains in power. Just as James suggests he should rally his evangelical Christian nationalist supporters by denigrating those following other religions or atheists, Trump has signed an executive order ‘cracking down’ on anti-Christian bias to be enforced by both the FBI and the IRS. He has also said, ‘God only made two genders’, thus demonizing and isolating the LGBTQ+ communities. As far as badges, all the MAGA congress members wear the lapel pin of the US flag. Others are also wearing a tiepin of an AR-15 style rifle. Border protection has been the top of Trump’s list of objectives even in his first term. In his first term, he spent close to $19 billion to build between 450 and 500 miles of wall on the Mexico/US border (which he always insisted Mexico would be paid for by Mexico). The length of the border is nearly 2000 miles. In his second term he says he plans to continue with this project despite the fact that the wall is not impermeable. Climbers or even people using ladders, have breached the wall, which in any case is falling down in places. In terms of national interest, since 1948, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) has expanded from the original 12 countries to its present level of 32 countries. This Alliance has ensured peace in Europe for the first time in a millennium. Trump has threatened to leave NATO (that would require Congressional approval) but is now undermining its existence by cutting funds and US military support. Instead, he has embraced our post WWII enemy,
Putin’s Russia. He has attempted to rewrite history by saying Ukraine invaded Russia when in fact has Russia attacked three times, firstly, in December 1991 which resulted in Ukraine becoming independent, secondly, in February 2014 when Russia occupied and annexed Crimea and then again in February 2022, more than three years ago. He continues to praise dictators while undermining democratically elected leaders around the world.
