Kraus was an Austrian Jewish writer and journalist. He was also known as a satirist, essayist, aphorist, playwright, and poet. He directed his satire at the press, German culture, and German and Austrian politics. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature on three occasions. He renounced his Jewish roots, adopted Catholicism only to reject it in later life. He died at age 62 in Vienna. One of his aphorisms is:
“The secret of the demagogue is to make himself as stupid as his audience so they believe they are clever as he.”
